Treaty of Waitangi - Our Nation's Children

Last term we spent about ten weeks working on a movie for a competition, Our Nation's Children. The task was to create a movie not much longer than 4 minutes, and the theme was- The Treaty of Waitangi; what is the relevance of New Zealand’s founding document to all New Zealanders today? The prize for the top three winners was a trip up to Waitangi, worth $10,000.

I had three parts in the movie. My main job was to be in the costume design group, but I was also in the classroom scene, and I played an English woman in the Waitangi scene. I got to wear an old fashioned dress and an awesome hat. I liked being in the costume design group because we all got along really well. But often we were silly and just spent our time talking.

It was a tough road to get everything together. For the English costumes we ended up collecting suits and dresses from Motueka High School and Imagine Theatre. For the Maori costumes we used the Kapa Haka costumes, and with the help of Mr. Howell, we made some cloaks out of spare material we found in the PA Centre.  It was challenging, but we had lot's of fun and we were pleased with the results.

If you want to watch the movie and see our awesome costumes, here's the link to the video on Youtube:

Unfortunately we didn't place anywhere, but we've still got quite a few positive reviews, which is good. If you want to see the winning entries, go onto Google and search for 'Our Nation's Children', the first link is the right one. Once there, scroll down and you will see 3 links to the winning movies.
